The Blue Chip sails! the maiden voyage of the blue chip on sacandaga lake with my dad, sleeping three days and two nights at a marina. Sailed pretty good, must have gone at least 5-6 knots at times. Met a helpful sailing community as well.

First Post

The Blue Chip

Day 10

I, have decided to start a blog referencing the work and progress I make with my recently purchased O'day 22. I will start by publishing the bill of sale I recieved after purchasing the boat from an owner of Lake George.

Bill of Sale

I, ----- of ----- Received $1.00 in payment for 1973 ODay 22 + Trailer, From ----

As you can see, I paid $1.00 for the boat. This was just for legal purposes.

I met the guy on craigslist, after posting an ad on craigslist that I was looking for a sailboat. Here is the ad:

I'm looking for an older sail boat, but I am on a tight budget. I'm interested in getting into sailing but don't have the funds, if anyone has a boat out there that you dont need/want please get back to me. Would not mind working on a boat to fix it up.

This ad was Jake's idea, typed exactly in his words. I then received an email from the sailboat owner saying he had a sailboat. The next weekend I drove up with my co captain, Jon, and my dad and step brother, Maksim. My first impression of the boat was that it was very bulky, and unattractive. It did not strike me as beautiful, but instead clunky, obtrusive and ugly. I definately did NOT fall in love with it at first sight. Also, there were a lot of mosquitoes, since it was located in a marshland. The boat had a profound smell. Getting past the first impression, I felt very overwhelmed by such a task I was undertaking. At 15, I was going to be the owner of a huge boat on a rusty trailer. Jon was excited though, and that rubbed off on me eventually. I was faced with many problems coming home. Although I had already arranged for Jake and his father to tow the boat to my moms house, I was worried that the trailer couldn't tow the boat, the tires would break and Jake's dad would bail on me. Fortunately, he did quite the opposite. I awoke saturday morning at 6:50 a.m. and got in his trailer at 7, dog tired. At around 9:30 we arrived at Gerry's house (for that's what his mom called him) and I saw the boat once again. All I can say about that day is that he planned on getting back at 12, and we ended up getting back a at five. Thats ten hours total. I must say, that, without the Platels I would never have gotten this boat. Period. Tremendous help they offered. Without Mr. Platel working out the trailer problems and towing it and Jake helping get the trailer set up and the giving me the idea for the craigslist ad, I know I wouldn't have gotten a 22 O'Day in my backyard. After buying some extra tires and working out light problems, we were on the road and towing it back.
So now it is in my backyard, and I've cleaned some of it with my mom and Jon, and today I will remove some of the wood from the interior. The real work begins soon:
  • Sanding and finishing ALL wood pieces
  • Replacing interior plywood with hardwood
  • Painting
  • Laying out the cabin (color scheme, possibly rearranging layout of beds/sink)
  • Getting mast up and learning how to set up sails
  • Get boat registered
  • Get trailer Registered
  • Sanding/ repainting trailer
For now thats all I can think of. I will now go tediously take out the paint covered screws inside the cabin, and hope I don't lose anything. Thanks for reading,
The trailer and boat haven't moved in at least ten years. The tires need air or may need to be replaced and the welds on the trailer should be checked carefully before I'd dive it up and down the hills on Rt 22 heading to Albany.
We can look it over this weekend and let you know what we think, or you can drive up and check it out for yourself.

That' would be great, but honestly we would be happy to let you have it for free. I was incorrect about the size, it is a 22 Oday, not a 23. We haven't used it in years but, it was a fun, easy, sailboat with a shoal keel, so it only needs to be in 3 feet of water.
It is at our property on the North East end of Lake George. We will up there over the weekend if you want to come and take a look.
